Most of what you can select in the Transform ribbon is also available by right-clicking an item (such as a column) and choosing from the menu that appears. Shape data When you shape data in the Query Editor, you’re providing step-by-step instructions (that Query Editor carries out for you) to adjust the data as Query Editor loads and presents it.
To get started, we select the query into which we want the other query to merge, then select Merge Queries from the Home tab on the ribbon. The Merge window appears, prompting us to select which table we’d like merged into the selected table, and then, the matching columns to use for the merge.
And, of course, it’s all still DAX, so if you’ve been using Power Pivot, you already just know it. Check Out the Paren-Matching on the New Editor! (My heart is all aflutter over nice touches like this) (Ooh and we don’t have to do the:= arcane dance anymore, just = Nice!) Editing from the Field List! This is a nice touch, and in many ways is better than the equivalent Excel experience: Doesn’t Matter Whether it’s a Measure or Calc Column: Just Click it and Edit in the Formula Bar One Last Trip Back to Nitpick Corner Just a few more things I noticed before I wrap up in a decidedly positive manner. • On my computer, the field list’s scroll bar is impossibly narrow and hard to “grab.” • When I’m in Data View, there’s a search box in the field list (yay!), but it’s NOT there when I’m in Dashboard view (why?). We would benefit from it both places. • If I accidentally put a measure under the wrong table, or just subsequently decide I want to move it, I don’t know if there’s a way to do it.

He was doing some interesting work with containers, and I was fascinated by their work. Since then, they've grown and refined their technology, and now they have Power BI for Mac available. As soon as I saw their, I wanted to share the experience. It's pretty amazing, and if I were still running OSX, I'd be looking to use some of the Microsoft tools I want on the native desktop. This isn't really native, but the experience feels native. The use of containerization technology might be debatable for databases, but for client applications, it's amazing.
Authoring takes place on Tableau Desktop which, as a stand-alone environment, can perform its own analysis, either against the Tableau in-memory database, or against external data sources – databases, cloud data sources, spreadsheets and so on. In a group or enterprise setting Tableau Server acts as a central facility for data access, delivering visualisations, enforcing security and managing user access. Tableau Server distributes visualisations through the web browser to almost any device that supports a web browser – desktops and mobile devices. Is something of a breath of fresh air in the over-hyped BI market. This is a platform that will address many needs in both large and small organizations, without the pretense that everyone with a display should spend all day playing with charts and dashboards.
Share and collaborate Quickly create collaborative dashboards to share live reports and custom data sets with your team. Tell stories with your data to engage your colleagues using the Power BI app. Visualize your data Explore and present your data in new ways with bold interactive charts, maps, and graphs.
A critical thing to remember here—and Microsoft emphasizes this—is that Publish to web means exactly that: the World Wide Web, not some private HTTP server you've got sitting behind your firewall. Visualizations uploaded via Publish to web are public and can be viewed by anyone. That might throw you if you're primarily involved with private data like your company's financial data, for example. But for many users, like journalists or professional content developers, it's a great way to get additional exposure for your work. Publish to web is a free download available to registered Microsoft Power BI users of either the desktop or online versions.
You could bring SSRS in an IaaS deployment, but that was clashing with many customers who were using Azure Platform as a Service (PaaS) to develop their solution and found themselves having to provision VMs for the reporting part. You could bring compact reporting solution (Web widgets) but those often fall short in terms of features.

Power BI is great for dashboards or anything that will be interactive for the end user. The various charts you put on a screen all interact nicely together with very little additional tweaking needed between them. This is great when you are trying to follow the data to find an answer you are looking for. Power BI is probably not going to be the best tool for a very specific report that someone might as for, with the report being pretty static. Think of something like a template design, Power BI will not be the tool for that. Anyone familiar with Power Query, in particular, will find Power BI to be happily similar in many ways.
Feel free to check out that page, or keep going in this document to see what you would do next. The next section picks up after the changes above are applied. Combine data That data about various states is interesting, and will be useful for building additional analysis efforts and queries. But there’s one problem: most data out there uses a two-letter abbreviation for state codes, not the full name of the state. We need some way to associate state names with their abbreviations. We’re in luck: there’s another public data source that does just that, but it needs a fair amount of shaping before we can connect it to our retirement table. Here’s the Web resource for state abbreviations: From the Home ribbon in Query Editor, we select Get Data > Web and type the address, select OK, and the Navigator window shows what it found on that Web page.
Charts, tables and dashboards are its main currency, of almost any level of complexity – or simplicity. Users can share their visualizations via various mechanisms and the platform was built ground up for mobile access – no matter the device (visualizations are rendered in HTML5). Perhaps the most significant Qlik Sense differentiator is its associative data engine.
There's no native Mac version of Power BI Desktop, though the is Under Review (being considered) by the Power BI team. You could add your votes there. Until that happens, are you able to run Windows on your Mac and install it that way? You can only run one operating system at a time, but there are plenty of resources online for how to do this. I've never needed to do that so can't really report how well it works for running Power BI, but it's worth a try. You can still use the features of PowerBI.com from your Mac (without running Windows), but that won't allow you full access to the report creation tools available in Power BI Desktop.
Users interested in data visualization will want to check out. Using Publish to web, you can publish reports and visualizations created in Microsoft Power BI to the web and related targets like emails or social media posts.

This area is the navigation map for interacting with Power BI Online and contains 3 main areas: Dashboards, Reports, and Datasets, which we will go over throughout this tip. I actually found it a bit confusing at first trying to determine the difference between a report, a dashboard, and a dataset. However, after working with them for a few iterations of testing, they eventually made more sense. We will start at the most basic concept which is a dataset. Similar to a dataset in SSRS, a Power BI dataset is source of data that can be used as the data basis for the other items in Power BI. Datasets can be static or dynamic; static datasets do not necessarily 'refresh' automatically while many dynamic datasets can and will auto refresh based on a schedule that either you set up or which is set at a default refresh rate.
OK, so How DO You Create Relationships? First off, you know that “Autodetect relationships” feature that has been lurking around Power Pivot since 2010? It’s back, and it actually performs relationship detection during import. So the three relationships pictured above were auto-created, I didn’t have to do anything other than import the data. I’m cautiously optimistic about this, but will need more real-world experience. Second, there’s a Manage Relationships button on the ribbon, and it leads to a familiar-looking friend: Displays the Existing Relationships, Just Like in Power Pivot What happens when you click “New” however is a wholly-unexpected surprise: OMG OMG OMG!

When you select OK, the Query functionality of Power BI Desktop goes to work. Query contacts the Web resource, and the Navigator window returns what it found on that Web page. In this case, it found a table ( Table 0) and the overall Web Document. We’re interested in the table, so we select it from the list. The Navigator window displays a preview. At this point we can edit the query before loading the table, by selecting Edit from the bottom of the window, or we can load the table.
Personally, I don't like downloading a bunch of stuff (data or desktop tools) to my devices and prefer robust cloud tools. I think many business analysts will feel the same way, especially in the near future. In any case, while individual preferences vary, there's no doubt that the current desktop tool is more robust for data prep work. In July, Microsoft announced, including the ability to integrate Big Data directly in the Power BI web service.
Enterprises will want to go with the Professional version, which has more data storage (10 GB), faster data fresh cycles (hourly), streaming data consumption (1 million rows per hour compared to the 10,000 rows per hour offered in the free tier), and collaboration features. It's one of the best BI tools on the market and is one of our three Editors' Choice recipients, along with. Today, Microsoft Power BI has 74 data connectors and it's adding more at a regular clip, which is a standout number even when compared to the more mature competition. Data connectors let you point your BI tool at a particular app or data set and incorporate that data into your queries.
When you run Power BI Desktop, a Welcome screen is displayed. You can Get Data, see Recent Sources, or Open Other Reports directly from the Welcome screen (from the links in the left pane). If you close the screen (select the x in the top right corner), the Report view of Power BI Desktop is displayed. There are three views in Power BI Desktop: Report view, Data view, and Relationships view.
• Create relationships and enrich your data model with new measures and data formats • When you import two or more tables, oftentimes you'll need to create relationships between those tables. The Power BI Desktop includes the Manage Relationships dialog and the Relationships view, where you can use Autodetect to let the Power BI Desktop find and create any relationships, or you can create them yourself. You can also very easily create your own measures and calculations or customize data formats and categories to enrich your data for additional insights.
Since it is largely web based, it's quite easy to share with coworkers and management, both in a read and write manner. I have not had much experience sharing outside the company, but it should be doable, if not a bit tricky to control access. Auto-distribution doesn't appear to be available as of the time of publishing this review, but is not expected to be on a free solution. Very easy to distribute with remote members, all is self explanatory for the most part. The platform is limited to the number of people who can access it, but the main issue is when multiple users are in the same app the speed is reduced. It's just something to be mindful about.
I can’t have anyone just install any of these tools without a 5 minute discussion about other software dependencies. The PBID discussion is easier, but still a barrier –one mostly solved by people bypassing the official IT channels and upgrading their IE on their own.
Power Bi is one of the neatest tools that Microsoft has built for data professionals. It allows anyone to build fantastic interactive visualizations that can help tell a story and help someone make decisions. There have been some amazing demo visualizations from Microsoft customers. I've seen a s, and a. There are also a fantastic set of custom visual controls, quite a few of which are described in.
Like I said, these are nits, but in good UX, all the nits get attention. Lastly, I was expecting to see “Many to Many” in the dropdown list, but try as I might (I even tried linking two Data/Fact tables to each other), I couldn’t get that option to appear. More on this as I learn more.
